Katrin Winkelmann combines legal and technical expertises with an entrepreneurial perspective on intellectual property. Her particular focus is on strategic IP consultancy for hidden champions and innovative medium-sized enterprises. Katrin Winkelmann provides her clients with comprehensive support in all matters relating to patent law. This also includes freedom-to-operate and infringement analyses, patent portfolio and patent mapping analyses, transaction consulting and IP due diligence, as well as patent valuation.

Katrin Winkelmann has many years’ experience in drafting technical patents and in designing international patent portfolios. Another core area is attacking and defending patents, not only in German and European opposition and appeal proceedings, but also in revocation proceedings. Her work to safeguard competitive advantages also includes legal action against rights infringements and the enforcement of claims. She also advises clients on employee inventions issues, in particular on innovation programmes and employee incentive arrangements.

According to Handelsblatt/Best Lawyers, Katrin Winkelmann ranks as one of Germany’s best lawyers in 2019 in the field of Intellectual Property Law. In 2019, the legal publication “Lawyer Monthly” conferred her the “Women in Law Award” in the category Patent Law.

Engineering studies at Technical University Darmstadt, Germany, State University of New York/USA, and University of Westminster/Great Britain, Master's degree in Civil Engineering (Dipl.-Ing.); post-gradual studies and PhD (Dr.-Ing.) in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Technical University of Aachen.

Several years of professional experience as strategy consultant at international strategy consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in the area of industrial goods, innovation and process management and at the Institute for Industrial Management FIR at RWTH Aachen University in the area of application-oriented research and consultancy as well as technology transfer applications for hidden champions and innovative SME.

Legal training at Eisenführ Speiser, at the division for patent infringement matters at Mannheim Regional Court as well as in the in-house IP department of a globally leading company in the agricultural engineering business. Final training and State Examination at the German Patent and Trademark Office and the Federal Patents Court. Patent Attorney (Germany) since 2010, European Patent Attorney since 2011.
