The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published the Global Innovation Index 2019. On the basis of 80 indicators, including expenditure on research and development and the number of international patent and trademark applications, the index ranks the innovation capacity of 129 countries. The leaders are Switzerland, Sweden, the USA, the Netherlands and Great Britain. Germany ranks ninth.
